For the third year in a row, I completed the NaNoWriMo 50,000 Word Challenge. However, this was my seventh year in a row as a participant. The first four years I failed miserably, at many levels, but I learned a lot about writing and more importantly, I learned a lot about myself.
One of the more outstanding things I saw this November was the efforts of one of my dearest writing buddies. First, she had a change of heart about the story she was writing and completely abandoned it a third of the way into the month. She then began working on a whole new story from scratch!
Then, barely two thirds of the way into the month, she broke one of her hands. This took her out of the running for a few days and set her word count back considerably. You ever try typing one-handed? I tell ya, it ain’t easy at all. Lastly, being almost 14K behind in her word count going into the last few days of the challenge, she pulled out all the stops and crossed the 50,000 word finish line – successfully completing the challenge!
For anyone who knows eensybeensyspider, they’re not all that surprised because they know that’s just who she is.
I still have a way to go on my current book, but I’m still having fun. I look forward to NaNoWriMo 2008 – if I’m not already writing another book by then!
