How Much We Write at Work

June 18, 2007

When I get home from my 10 hour days at work to sit down at my PC to write – sometimes the words don’t come. I wonder why I can’t think of anything to write or why I don’t even have the desire to write.

I was recently cleaning out my burgeoning e-mail box at work and was surprised to see the volume of e-mail I generate every day.

I decided to see just how many words I write on a daily basis at work. I collected all my notes and messages for the past month and found that I average 1,500 words a day -or- 7,500 words a week!

That’s like writing a 300 page novel every 7-weeks!

So, I do crank out plenty of words – just not for the reason I’d prefer.

Fantastic Fiction: Beyond Swords and Sorcerers

June 12, 2007

Fantasy writing got a bit of a boost in the latest ‘Writer’s Digest’ magazine. It takes a look at the new wave of literary fantasy out there on the shelves.

I don’t read too many “literary” works as I often find them overly wordy. However, I decided to pick up Audrey Niffenegger’s “The Time Traveler’s Wife” (mentioned in the article). I’m only half-way through it, but it has me totally hooked. It’s original, fluid and well written.

You don’t have to go out and get the magazine – you can read the article right here:
