My job, my career, is killing my artistic creativity. Thirteen months ago, I took a good job with lots of potential and great pay. This is what I got. What it’s costing me is the ability to write creatively.
The job entails looking at financial data, software code and machine code in great detail. Much of it is stuff I’ve never done before and is a new learning experience. I’ve noticed that the more technical material I fill my head with the less able I am to write creatively. Even worse – I don’t even want to write.
I still have and use creativity to a great degree, but it is more logical and mechanical now. It’s no longer an artistic creativity where I can pull imaginings from the ether and get it down on the page. I wonder if this has happened to other writers.
